NYC

The Gustafsons are going to NYC this week!

Any suggestions? Must-sees? Must-Dos? Must-packs? Must-wears? Must eats?

We are going to see Memphis, which is apparently incredible! I don't doubt it. I'll probably cry.

I'm also pushing to do the NBC Studio Tour because I'm about 3/4 through with Tina Fey's Bossypants(very good!).

  1. What? What?? I'm so jealous. You HAVE to do the NBC studio tour - it is just SO cool. We went at about 2:15 and got to preview Jimmy Fallon's monologue for that night. Like a test audience. Like, as in, Jimmy Fallon was 20 feet away from me. I almost died.

If you've never been in this weather, know that it's going to be humid like Oklahoma times about six. I don't understand it, but it's going to be humid.

If you get a chance to visit the Met, do it. It's pay-whatever-you-want, and it's worth at least a quick look-around.

AND you should take the Staten Island ferry back and forth at least once. It's free, about an hour round-trip, and you can get some good pictures of yourself in front of NYC and the Statue of Liberty. Just take the 1-2-3 down to the very end and walk into the ferry building - super easy. And then subway back up a few blocks to see Ground Zero and GO SHOPPING AT CENTURY 21.

Central Park is wonderful but get a map and know where you are or you'll be lost. It's so much bigger than you could ever think it is.

    I'M SO JEALOUS!

  2. Ok, ok... very fun! If you take the Staten Island ferry, go early. If you go in the afternoon you may have to wait in line for a while.

I suggest eating several times a day when you find sandwich or pizza places. We would share a piece of pizza then an hour or so later share something else, you get to taste so much more that way and really don't spend more money. Stage Door Delicatessen is right by where the twin towers were and it was featured on one of the food/travel channels, very good. Brick Oven Pizza is also very yummy.

Reserve a night or two for eating cheesecake and people watching, glorious! The later, the better. Roxy in Time Square was the best cheesecake we found.

I thought riding in a taxi was fun but I also was trying to find the Cash Cab.

To get a good feel of the city, take the tour bus and sit on the top the first morning you are there. You get to see a ton and you will know where you are in relation to most things for the rest of the trip, it's worth the money.

Take a water bottle so you don't have to constantly buy something to drink... the food there is $$$$$. If you ever venture the the non touristy business part of town (don't ask me where that is, you will just know) look for a grocery store (it will blend with the buildings around in) and buy food for picnic and eat it in central park, fun!

Ya'll will find stuff that no one suggests to you and it will be your favorites! Have fun Gustafson's!!!

  3. I just finished reading bossypants and seriously laughed out loud about 1,000 times. It was getting embarrassing.
Where are you staying? I could recommend some places around the area for you!
As far as food goes I love love the Carnegie Deli for cheesecake(7th at 55th). They also have ridiculously huge sandwiches. It's a closeish walk from where you will be seeing Memphis- only about 10 blocks. It's on the expensive side but you can easily share.
Leighton says "tell them if they like bbq they HAVE to go to Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem, TELL THEM." I haven't been there, but this is me telling you on behalf of Leighton. It's at 125th and 12th, kind of out of the way from where you'll be i'm sure but apparently it's amazing (i've never been).
Clinton Street Bakery has literally the best pancakes I have ever eaten in my entire life. They get busy on weekends if you don't go early, but seriously the pancakes are to die for. It's on Clinton Street between East Houston and Stanton. One of my favorite italian places is Picolo Angelo, its at 621 hudson on the corner of Jane. It's really small and really amazing!!! If you like italian I would suggest going somewhere out of the way and NOT in Little Italy. You will get completely ripped off there and the food sucks. China Town on the other hand has amazing and really really cheap food so that might be something fun to do. Also, another place that's really touristy and you'll probably have to wait forever and the host is extremely rude and grumpy, but that I still love..is Serendipity. If you don't mind all of the above the desserts/sundaes are delicious, huge, and the atmosphere is fun. The Waffles and Dinges food cart has amazing savory and sweet Belgian waffles. You can download the food truck app for your iphone from Zagat and find out where all the good food trucks are at any given time. Is that enough food related stuff? I don't get out much in my own city but I do eat...
I'll be thinking of more if you let me know where you will be!

  5. Go over to Boken and eat at Carlos' Bakery. We also frequent The Madison in Hoboken. Go see Jersey Boys! If you make it down to Jersey, eat at Harolds in Edison. In NY, Gallagher's Steak House on 52nd Street is awesome for a nice dinner. Junior's is really good too. When you go often... things get boring, but these are pretty much the places I don't get sick of going all the time. :)
