To rent or not to rent

Living in a 500 sq. ft. 1 bedroom apartment isn't all bad, but now that we can afford something a little bigger, we are at a crossroads to decide whether or not to upgrade to a rent house after our lease is up.

Here are the pros and cons of upgrading:

Pro
Get a kitten
Room to work out in my living room (which will never happen, who am I kidding?)
More countertop space
A bathroom sink that isn't so low to the ground that it hits my knees
More storage space
Having a backyard
Being able to grow my own herb garden (yeah right)
More closet space (=more clothes=more shoes..that's the rule right? When you have more space you have to buy more stuff?)

Con
Higher rent
Longer wait to buy a house
In our apartment, Brody has no choice but to sit by me when I'm in a snuggly mood
Less to clean
Would have to mow a lawn
More temptation for Brody to get a dog
Must spend money to furnish it
No pool (never been to ours)
No gym (ditto)
No free golf (only Brody cares)

What do you think we should do?

  1. If you're happy where you are - continue to save to buy a house. You can buy one sooner than if you spend more to rent a house. Renting is just throwing money away - so try to throw away as little as possible ;)
That would be my humble opinion.

  2. I agree... although being cramped up in a tiny space is crappy for a LITTLE while... think of the rewards of waiting until you can BUY a house. Another HUGE con with rent houses is that the landlords are less likely to react if there is a problem. For example, a bug problem in an apartment usually affects more than just you, so a landlord will take care of it on the fly. Landlords might not even live in the STATE of the rent houses they own... thus, it takes forever to get stuff done. Plus, you'll have so many funny stories to tell your kids about the tiny apartment you lived in when you got married.

  3. I would wait. We lived in a very tiny apartment when we first got married, it was small but nice and when we finally did upgrade after we'd saved a lot and paid off all of our debt, it was VERY exciting. Good luck!

  4. I'm not a financial expert because I overdraw on a regular basis BUT i think it would be smarter to stay at the LInk and keeps saving. I mean, you're not miserable there so why not just stick it out.....it could be worse.....you could be living in pphase 2. I LOVE U

  5. I like your little apartment...but a house would be fun too! I don't know...maybe try and save a little longer?

  6. stay in your little apartment if it means you can BUY a house sooner. home ownership is the best thing ever!!!

a house is a lot of work, i can't imagine living in a house that isn't MINE but having to take care of it...that would suck!!

stay in your little apartment with little rent as long as you can! think about the extra money a month you would use to rent on a house and save it for YOUR house!
